Families Advocate for Weight Loss Treatment

UK families have had success getting assistance with tuition from Local Health Authorities, Specialised Commissioning Groups, GP's, Social Services Departments, and local charities.

Wellspring works closely with families and these organizations in order to help more families get the weight loss treatment they need for their child. While Wellspring continues to advocate on behalf of the thousands of families who inquire about our programmes, families can often succeed on their own.

Recommended Process for Families to Seek Funding:

Below is an outline for how you can seek funding from your Local Health Authority:

  1. Write a Summation of your Child's Weight Issues. This includes medical issues, behavioural issues, and any associated issues. Weight often has significant impact on physical, emotional, and social health of individuals. Medical effects, low self-esteem, social isolation, depression, poor academic performance, school refusal, and anger issues are all common issues associated with weight.
  2. Consult your GP and get GP Assessment. Seek assessment of child's current weight and health. Ask GP to write GP Assessment. Get a copy for your records. Or ask for GP to directly contact local PCT via phone with this assessment.

When you visit your GP:

    1. Bring your Summation of Child's Weight Issues with you. Offer to include your Summation with GP Assessment.
    2. Bring Wellspring Camp brochure to explain the approach, in case your doctor is unfamiliar with our leading approach and results.
    3. NOTE: should additional Wellspring materials need to be sent to your GP, please e-mail jmorrison@wellspringcamps.com for more materials.

  1. Contact your Local Health Authorities to Inquire about Paying for Treatment. Include your Summation of Child's Weight Issues and GP Assessment, if you have it.
    1. Where possible, try to assess the cost of current care to help your child and potential future cost if situation continues or worsens.
    2. Assess and critique any recommendations for treatment provided by local authorities (unfortunately, day camps, diets, or education-based programmes have limited long-term benefits as shown by numerous studies. Attempts with these programs and subsequent failures often have even more negative impact in health and well-being of child.) Unlike these options, Wellspring is a scientifically based programme with renowned initial and long-term results.

Consistency, tenacity, and commitment are keys to receiving funding.  Government and Local Health authorities are coming to appreciate the significant advantages of treating weight issues now rather than treating the co-morbidities of weight later.

Raising Awareness for Treatment

Wellspring is working with the NHS and local PCTs to raise awareness about the thousands of children, teens, and young adults who require effective weight loss treatment. Your child's story helps Wellspring “put a face” to this important challenge.

Your story will help Wellspring seek assistance for your child and thousands like him/her.  Thanks, in advance, for your help.
