UK YOUTH WEIGHT-LOSS CAMP OPENS FOR 2nd SUMMER

Please find below media briefing information, links to detailed material and press contact details for Wellspring UK, a US-style weight-loss camp for overweight and obese youngsters.

In Brief

Wellspring UK, the first comprehensive and scientifically-based weight-loss camp outside of the United States, opens for a third summer on 6 July, 2008.

12-18 year-old youngsters will gather at a base camp in Penrith for four, six or eight weeks, and travel to The Lake District National Park for activities like abseiling, rock climbing and canoeing.

Does It Work?

In 2006 and 2007, youngsters who took part in the camp lost an average of 2kg (4.4lbs) per week and in some cases as much as 16-19 kg (25-30 lbs). On average, youngsters who attend Wellspring courses not only maintain their weight loss, but go on to lose more weight over the following year.

The following graph displays the exceptional outcomes of Wellspring Camps vs. a more traditional weight loss camp.

How Does It Work?

Wellspring UK isn’t just about diet. A cognitive behavioral approach is taught where students set goals and monitor themselves. These techniques are one of the most widely accepted approaches to long-term weight-loss success.

What Do They Eat?

Daily menus include three meals, two healthy snacks, plus unlimited foods like fat-free yoghurts and salads. A typical day of controlled foods will include 1,200 calories, 10 g of fat, 50 g of protein, and 30 g of fibre. Uncontrolled foods will add to these totals – often significantly.

Who’s behind Wellspring UK?

Wellspring UK is a programme of Wellspring, the leading organisation of treatment programs for overweight and obese children. Wellspring operates 11 summer programmes around the world, as well as two year-round boarding schools in America.

Can I interview someone from Wellspring UK?
